I went for a small business trip to meet some new and current leather suppliers in the area and see the process of my tanners and rattan makers to answer sustainability and pollution questions for me and my customers. This trip was about finding and confirming proper suppliers who meets my requirements and I can be sure with my products when i sell it. The journey and research started in Magetan area after 15 hour bus ride from Bali…

I visited several places and my main personal and business goal was to clarify, confirm and compare that my people are working in ethical conditions and are aware of the environmental impact. As i mentioned above Magetan area is known and famous for tanners of all kinds. I am mainly doing vegetable tanned leather due to its lower impact on our nature and even that is not perfect as I found out, but we can minimize bad outcome for the environment when we choose the right people to work with. Continue reading to find out more about the leather situation, but first what actually veg. tan. leather is?

What is vegetable tanned leather (veg. tan. leather)?

Tanning is a processing animal skin to make leather by using chemicals or plant based liquid. Vegetable is the specifying the tanning process. Vegetable tanned means that during the process they use water with acacia bark instead of chemicals. The most popular chemical process is using chromium, which is used mostly in the world due to its effectiveness and price to make it.

Fun fact: You can sometimes see written in the description veg. tan. leather – it has nothing to do with color tan, it is short for “tanned”.

Ethical working condition for people? Confirmed.

I visited small and big tanneries and even though they differentiate with its size and process, which i will describe later, they have a common view how to treat people. They all provide gloves and boots, which is the minimum their workers need to protect themselves from the liquids, putty, tools and leather. You will not see people working with their bare hands or bare feet like in other tanneries in developing countries in Asia or Africa. This is a great achievement for people working in these conditions as their health matters and I am glad my first requirement is confirmed with my leather supplier in Magetan.

Pollution and sustainability. Confirmed and sorted!

I always minimize my impact on our environment and therefore I was looking at the process and each part of the process of some tanneries. What I found out is disappointing and it also includes other people and brands, who talk about sustainability and Eco-friendly products and while they talk about it they have no idea how their materials are actually made. Luckily there are still responsible people and I can work with tanners, who actually care about the regulations and environment with proper filter.

Issue with polluted river

Most of the tanneries have the same or similar process and you can read about the whole process below as it includes cleaning the hides, cutting the hides and dehydrating. Where it is not same is the final liquid waste and where it goes. Some tanneries put the processed water back to the river and they don’t care about its damage. Nobody wants to have smelly and unhealthy rivers.

Acacia bark bath with leather
Chemical free, but would you still waste unfiltered liquid it to the river?

As Indonesian person I can go around and get the information I need and can see what happens with my own eyes. Unfortunately there are people, who are extremely irresponsible for the environment for whatever reason they have. Luckily not all people are like that and I found tanneries, who work as a community and share the filter system together. I would like to emphasize and urge all people to check on their leather suppliers on what they do with the polluted water and how they treat it.

Responsible suppliers. Filter the liquid waste!

There are many suppliers and makers, who care for other people in the area and are responsible with their work. We just need to find them and work with them. Usually they will work as a community or it is a big tannery as the filter installation is expensive and one small tannery just cannot afford it.

The responsibility goes especially to the chromium( and other chemicals) based tanneries, which definitely need to have protective gloves and boots at least and filtering process for waste management.

I want to be responsible for my products and that’s why I went to explore the options and see it in person rather than just saying – yes we use vegetable tanned leather we are Eco-friendly. I want my customers to know that we can do better and we do.

Filter system, last process is in the blue barels

Tanning process

The bigger factories process the leather same way as small home tanneries.
1. Mix the raw hide with lime and give it a spin in the huge barrels known as lime bath. This will clean hide from all parts like hair.
2. Put each hide through a press looking machines, which will clean the hide from last pieces of meat and leftovers.
3. Bath the leather in acacia bark for few weeks or months in few simple The leftover kind of muddy and fatty part is dried out on the sun. After few weeks it becomes a soil and can be used as a building material.

Fun fact: There is no major damage done to the acacia tree itself. Workers just take the bark from the tree and that bark re-grows back in 2-3 months. There is no need for destroying the trees or forest.

Acacia bark

Conclusion

WildIndo is not just a fashion brand. WildIndo and I stand for well made products, ethical work and environment. All these parts are very important to me and I think it should be important to everyone. If you purchase any leather product, you should know from where and how it is produced that you do not accidentally and indirectly damage world’s nature. I am bit sad as I found out that vegetable tanned leather does not necessarily mean Eco-friendly. At the end it depends on each tanner and supplier how responsible they are and you have the power in choosing your brand and right business partner. The same way I check on my partners and the process.

Interested in rattan products instead of leather? Second part of my Java trip was concentrated on my rattan maker in Jepara area.

We have never been in huge and luxury resorts like The Apurva Kempinski and The Westin Nusa Dua. It is a great accomplishment and it looks amazing for a holiday stay where you want to completely forget about your work and just relax.

We like that the resorts also care about Indonesian artisans and products from Indonesia. There are only the best products from all around in Indonesia in the boutique of The Apurva Kempinski. You will be amazed about all the different kinds of crafts and accessories. Although it is not limited to only women accessories as we saw chocolate and home ware as well.

We are proud to be part of their portfolio and we are so happy about these contacts and people, who want to work with us. We wanted to finish our mini-series about the partnerships in high standard and we have a few new amazing places to add later, but for now this is set in high and positive vibe and we are going for that bright future we dreamed of for months.

iOCO found us by accident and contacted Friska for cooperation few weeks ago. It turns out we have accessories styles that fit their clothing as our designs are modern. Combination of modern designs and city style is a great step forward for both brands.

We are also pleased and impressed by iOCO’s business building as that’s what we are trying to achieve in WildIndo too. iOCO already accomplished one building where there is a space for production, designers, office and beautiful store we are now part of.

Asking how our products are traditional? It is not only about the products, our products are modern and designed well. Our tradition is part of our people, artisans and craftsmen, who are behind each item. The tradition of passing skills from generation to generation and spending hours and days making those lovely and unique pieces.

When Friska started in June 2016 in a small bamboo shop in Bali, there was a little vision of what it could be in few years. She knew for sure, the new and unique designs is her main advantage. She is an artist by heart.

As in any business there are challenges to overcome. One of the first challenges for Friska, was to find a reliable tailors as the quality was not enough and timeline was never close to what was promised. Throughout the years she found few tailors and artisans, who now work with her directly in-house and externally. The quality is right where it should be and timeline is accomplished accordingly. Our tailors now can help you make your own clutch in our workshops in Bali.

Workshop: making your own clutch. Photo taken from one of sessions. Mr. Hakim on left and our client on right.

Although quality of products improved over the years, she has never searched for her clients. They all came to her and made custom bags or wholesale order. That was actually nice to realize after running a business for 3 years without realizing other businesses are actually searching for new clients. That’s just a proof that the designs and products are great. And yes we start looking for new clients as well, because we want brands and people to understand that handmade products are worthy. We are mainly talking about Wildindo and few other brands who really care about their people, high quality products and life in developing countries.

People, location, bags, jewelry, designs and strategy have a common thing. Constant changes. It is part of any life and in Wildindo we deal with changes almost every week. One of the recent major change was take apart our Bamboo shop due to increased prices of the land rental. Bali is still growing and sometimes prices get crazy. It was a very nostalgic moment for Friska as it was the beginning of WildIndo. Even though there is not much connection to the bamboo shop anymore, it was still the start of our journey.

Builders taking bamboo shop completely apart.

What Wildindo plans in future?

Friska’s need and what makes her happy is to continue working on new designs. There are bags and sandals, but also upcoming jewelry and home ware. Sustainable living will be one of our main parts. We are also partnering up with luxurious modern and traditional hotels, who appreciate handmade quality products. We want to stand for high quality and well designed products and as an ethical brand. We will be updating you soon on our blog about upcoming news.

Thank you all for supporting us and buying beautiful handmade products from ethical brands.

We work with many artisans around Indonesia. Every one of them has different skills and passions, but they all share one important value – family. In their free time they have activities with their wife, husband and children. We are happy to cooperate with them, support their craftsmanship and life in exchange for high quality product.

We interviewed some of our artisans to give you better understanding of who makes your bags and accessories. You can find them divided in categories of what they make and are good at.

Leather and rattan

Mr. Hakim

Artisan Hakim Leather and rattan maker

Mr. Hakim was born 34 years ago in small village in West Java. He grew up there and also started to learn tailoring after high school. He didn’t learn from his father, but from his friends who were bit older than him and already were working in a leather factory. He liked the kind of work and thought it could be his skill and passion. It has been 15 years since those first moments from the first factory in Java and now he is skilled tailor and artisan with an open mind and experience.

When we asked mr. Hakim about the situation and why he likes to work with us in Wildindo, we were quite shocked and sad about some of the factories and his experience. As working for a factory in Indonesia can be quite unstable job and where the skill matters just as much as you like your boss. We understand it can be in any job difficult with your boss, so lets concentrate on the stability of working in a factory.

If there is a lot of work, they work long shifts, as fast as possible to finish all the work. Then when work is done and there is no more orders, there are unpaid holiday. This can be good if the factory has enough orders. If not, that can be difficult for him and his family. He can just move around the factories and ask if there is an open spot and sometimes it can be very unlucky. Mr. Hakim told us that several years back some months were really difficult to eat and basically survive.

That’s one of the main reasons why he likes to work in Wildindo. Small team, friendly environment and stable pay. You could also see some pictures of our artisans sitting on the floor. For people outside of Indonesia it can be a bit surprising that artisans in Indonesia usually sit on the floor, but he is very comfortable with a lot of space on the floor.

Outside of work he likes to ride a motorbike and racing, but not as much as before, because he has a 4 year old son. He spends most of the time with him and his wife in Denpasar, Bali.

Bamboo

Mr. Mustofa

Artisan Mustofa Bamboo bags

Mr. Mustofa works directly with our partner bamboo factory, where they have a lot of space and machines. He has been working with them for a few years, after he moved to Bali from Jember East Java, where he was working with bamboo and wood for 18 years. He moved to Bali with his family for more work options as the bamboo bags since bamboo bags because popular.

Mr. Mustofa said, that in a good day he can make 8 bags, but he means the form and structure. We were asking him, when he was working on putting bamboo square bags together. In the linked article you can see described process of how to make the bamboo bag. As it needs some wood and bamboo preparation and polishing.

He use Bambu Mpring or Bamboo Apus from Bangli, Bali for our bamboo bags. This bamboo is 1 year old and is the best quality bamboo you can find in Bali.

While he works he loves to listen to his favorite Dangdut music. His main hobby is his work and work with any kind of wood. He admits that he is a workaholic.

When he doesn’t work he spends most of his time with his wife and big family of 4 children. He also like to watch football and cheer for his team.

Every bamboo bag in Bali goes through a long process before it becomes a beautiful hand bag you can wear. We visited our artisans and put some pictures together that you can see how it is made.

Every product needs raw material, bamboo grows everywhere in Asia and Bali is no exception. Bamboo is softened and cleaned with salty water from the ocean. Then processed bamboo is delivered to artisans.

Bamboo Tree in Bali

When artisans receive the bamboo rolls, they cut it to the sticks and start measuring and adjusting size of those sticks for the bags. It is a precise job and our artisans use the measure box, where they can see which stick is too long and mark the cutting point.

Prepared and measured sticks are then tight together with a string and small wooden balls are placed in between them. This technique allows artisans to make a certain pattern and design.

Artisan Using Strings to tie babmoo pieces together

Some parts of the bag needs to be strong and hold together for good. There is little bit of glue for this purpose. It starts to look like a bag you know 🙂

Artisan Finalizing Bags WithGlue

If you ever saw somebody working with wood, you know that before finishing you need to use sandpaper to make it smooth and clean. Bamboo needs that too if we want our bags last long.

Artisan Sanding Bamboo Bag

There is the almost last part of the process, which is coloring and sun drying of the bags. Bamboo bags are not smoked as Ata bags, they are sun dried.

We mainly use cow leather for our bags, sometimes soft goat and sheep leather for accessories. In WildIndo we do not use any synthetic or fake leather, because of short-term quality and durability.

Cow condition in Indonesia

I grew up in Sumatra and I still remember when my grandpa brought me to the meadow next to our village to feed his cows. He must have had around 5 cows and I used to go up on their back while they were eating the grass. That’s what you can call cow farm in Indonesia, pretty much free range cow for meat and leather. I can still see these activities in Sumatra, Java and Bali where several cows eat grass in the fields. We take our leather mostly from small farmers from Magetan, Jawa.

Farmer Bapak with his cows near our home in Bali

Time to harvest leather

We live in Bali where the main religion is Hinduism. However the rest of Indonesian islands is inhabited with muslims. Once a year Eid al-Adha (Islam ceremony – Festival of Sacrifice) need to give Qurban. The cows or goats are sacrificed and shared with people who cannot afford to eat meat (to the poor) and relatives. Cow leather supply is abundant after the ceremony. It would be a waste if people do not use skin of those already dead animals.

Tanning Process

As there are many cows in Magetan, they also became famous for leather tanning. Traditional tanning process itself using non chemical tanning such as Acacia bark and its components. I will be explaining more details on types of leather and process in one of the next articles.

Choose the best Ata Bali bag with our tutorial and pay attention to the details like we do. There are many patterns and shapes and we will explain how it is made and what to be aware of. We are from Bali, we know.

About Ata bags

Ata moon as one of the first adjustments from Friska

One of the main Balinese products is a bag from Ata grass. Ata grows in the jungle as a weed and our artisans harvest it from area around Teganan village. It goes through a process of cutting and smoking before it is made into a beautiful bag. It all started with plain and star round bags for Wildindo. These simple and elegant bags are still very popular and you can find them on many corners of Bali. Our artisans also evolved into small patterns with the black roots of Ata grass as you can see on the picture. The little moon pattern brings small piece of individuality and uniqueness and is so cute.

What are the main parts of every bag our artisans make?

Material and surface

Double lining vs single lining

Leather or natural strap and handle

Material

Plant as Ata grass from Bali is extremely flexible and can be made into many bag shapes. Although It can create some unwanted defects, if not properly done. When you look at round ata bag, it should be round. There are tiny uneven parts and bumps as it is still handwoven, but we’ve seen some noticeable ones. Just be careful if you buy a few somewhere else.

If you see any leftovers ata grass on the surface, side or bottom of the bag, there are usually a few, it’s not a problem, you can simply cut it with nail-clipper or scissors. This happens because there is the end of the ata string and the new one starts. Sometimes it happens during the drying stage when the string ends outside of the line.

After sun-drying or smoking, the material and the bag itself becomes light and durable. In case water is spilled on the bag, you can wipe it and let it dry.

Double lining with Batik

In short, Batik is colored cotton cloth and also a method of coloring. You can read more about it on wiki Batik.

You can see linning of the bag is batik

There are many different types and we use designs from our Balinese artisans. Patterns with lines, flowers or animals are just amazing and we line the bags properly. That means double lined to make them smooth inside and without any defects and glue. Most of the time you will easily recognize single lining, because you will see glue or ruined Batik as you need to be more careful when putting the cotton inside the bag.

Strap, handle and clasp

Some bags have straps, some have handles and some have it all. We use leather or the natural ata grass made into a wide string. There are also some plastic straps, so just be aware and check the material properly. Clasp also vary, it can be natural or leather with a button. We mostly work with leather, but we have selection of bags, which are fully natural, completely vegan. All made from ata grass. The strap is handwoven same way as a clasp on a picture with Ata Star bag,

Sometimes in the beginning the clasp button is really hard to close and click. In case that happens, there is a simple fix. Make tiny drop of oil on the tissue and use it on the button. Or just keep using it and it will fix itself eventually. We check our buttons and bags, but it might happen to you somewhere else.

We do what we can to provide best Ata Bali bags to our customers and we are proud behind our hard work for every single bag as it is not easy to make and it takes time to deliver it in high quality.

How do we make our Ata bags in Bali?

Using simple tool for making ata grass same width

Harvesting Ata grass is not easy as it might sounds, it twists among the trees so you cannot easily get it. It grows mainly in jungle on the ground bush and trees.

Preparing Ata grass strings for the bag. Our artisans use any objects where you can make a sharp hole, then you pull the strings through, simple.

When you have enough strings you can start waving the bag of your choice and shape.

One of the last and important parts is drying, we do sun drying and smoke drying. You can see the difference between fresh and dried.

Placing Batik embroidery made in Bali. We buy Batik from Balinese artisans. Every Indonesian island has slightly different Batik style and pattern.
